The Funchal City Council (CMF) will present Filipe Gouveia's book "Trilogia da Morte" on Friday, September 25th, at 4:30 PM, in the foyer of the Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias (TMBD).
The publication, part of the Baltazar Dias Collection, brings together three dramatic works that premiered at TMBD between 2022 and 2026, staged by the AGON company. The launch will be attended by the author, Sara Maia, co-founder of the company, and the president of the CMF. Admission is free.
Inspired by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse—Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death—"Trilogia da Morte" comprises the texts "Livrai-nos da Peste!" (Deliver Us from Pestilence!), "Livrai-nos da Guerra!" (Deliver Us from War!), and "Livrai-nos da Fome!" (Deliver Us from Famine!). The plays connect different historical periods with contemporary issues, using Madeira as the central territory for their narratives.
The project began in 2022 with "Livrai-nos da Peste!", drawing parallels between the Bubonic Plague in Madeira in 1521 and the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021. In 2024, "Livrai-nos da Guerra!" linked the reception of Gibraltarian refugees in Madeira in 1940 with the arrival of Ukrainian refugees in 2023. The trilogy culminates in 2026 with "Livrai-nos da Fome!", which addresses hunger in its literal and metaphorical dimensions, drawing inspiration from Madeiran gastronomy.
