Flying to the island of Madeira is among the most stressful air routes in Europe, according to a new study by AirAdvisor. The connection between Lisbon and Funchal ranks fourth on this list, scoring 61.4 out of 100.
The study highlights weather conditions at the destination as the main stress factor for passengers flying to Madeira, assigning this variable the maximum score of 10. While the Lisbon-Madeira route does not show high cancellation rates or significant delays compared to other European routes, the unpredictability of the weather on the island contributes to traveler anxiety.
The stress index measures the potential anxiety associated with a journey, considering factors like flight duration, cancellation rates, delays, and crucially, weather conditions at departure and arrival points. Madeira is noted for having the highest weather exposure among the routes analyzed, excluding Norwegian connections.
