Sixty-two years ago, Madeira celebrated the inauguration of Funchal Airport, a historic milestone for the region.
The Diário de Notícias da Madeira marked the occasion with the statement: "If there are days that can be foreseen to remain in the history of a land, today is certainly one of them."
The new airport infrastructure was crucial in establishing a direct air link between the island and the rest of the world, promising to significantly reduce travel times to Lisbon and other European capitals.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by the then President of the Republic, Américo Tomás, and government ministers.
