Funchal Emphasizes Commitment to Child Participation in Local Policy-Making

Helena Leal, Councilor for Education at the Funchal Municipal Chamber, restated the municipality's commitment to including children in the development of local policies. This statement was made during the opening of the 34th EECERA International Conference, held at Madeira Tecnopolo.

Leal highlighted Funchal's vision as an Educating City and a Child-Friendly City, emphasizing that child participation is essential for active citizenship. She pointed to the Local Strategy for Children's Rights, developed with input from over 600 children and young people, and the 'Children in Participation' project.

The councilor also addressed the significance of digital literacy, advocating for children to be empowered to engage critically and safely in the virtual environment. She concluded by stating the aim is to "develop policies with children," not just for them.
