The Autonomous Region of Madeira registered the lowest unemployment rate in the country during the second quarter of 2026, according to official data. The rate stood at 3.5%, marking a significant decrease compared to the previous quarter and the same period last year.
Compared to other NUTS II regions in Portugal, Madeira was clearly below the national average of 5.3%. Regions such as Centro and Alentejo recorded 4.0%, while the Setúbal Peninsula had the highest rate at 7.4%.
Furthermore, the number of unemployed people in Madeira reached its lowest point since 2011, with approximately 5,000 individuals. Conversely, the employed population increased by 6.2% compared to the previous year.
