A section of the glass floor at the Cabo Girão viewpoint has been covered with a metal plate after reportedly being damaged by a young tourist who threw a stone at it. The impact cracked one of the layers of the specially reinforced glass panel.
Staff immediately cordoned off the affected area and requested an inspection by the Regional Laboratory of Civil Engineering. Engineers concluded that the damage had not weakened the platform or posed any risk of collapse. The glass used in such structures consists of multiple layers, ensuring it remains secure even with one layer damaged.
As suitable replacement glass is unavailable in Madeira, a metal sheet has been installed over the damaged section. A replacement has been ordered, but its arrival may be delayed as the manufacturer is closed for August holidays. The Cabo Girão viewpoint remains open, with the rest of the glass platform accessible to visitors.
