The Regional Secretary for Inclusion, Labor, and Youth, Paula Margarido, stated that "being a local representative is much more than holding an office," during the 1st Meeting of Female Parish Council Representatives of Madeira.
The event, promoted by ANAFRE in Porto Moniz, honored former Parish Council presidents and served as a space for reflection on politics in the public sphere. Margarido emphasized the proximity of Parish Councils to the population and the impact of decisions made by the 26 honorees.
Margarido recalled the struggle for equal rights, mentioning Carolina Beatriz Ângelo and the achievement of the right to vote in 1974. The secretary expressed the hope that, in the future, women will be news for their work and not for being women in political positions.
