Walkers using the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (PR8) will face temporary diversions from Wednesday, September 30th, as repair and improvement works get under way.
The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) stated that short detours will be introduced along sections of the usual route to protect visitors while work takes place. These will be clearly signposted with directional arrows, and all walkers must follow the on-site instructions.
The restrictions are expected to remain in place for at least 270 days. The project represents an investment of €487,175.28, co-financed through PRODERAM20 and the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development. The contract allows 360 days for completion and aims to improve safety and conditions for walkers on one of Madeira’s best-known trails.
Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture Eduardo Jesus highlighted that the priority is to make the route safer while protecting the natural features that make Ponta de São Lourenço distinctive. The work is part of a wider program to improve Madeira’s walking routes, including infrastructure repairs and measures to accommodate current usage levels, ensuring safe and responsible enjoyment with minimal landscape impact.
