Porto Santo Prioritizes Quality Tourism Over Volume

Porto Santo's future lies in its identity, history, and culture, rather than an indiscriminate increase in visitor numbers, stated Mayor Nuno Batista.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Atlantic Tourism Days in Velas, São Jorge, Batista emphasized the goal of offering visitors a distinctive experience that creates a lasting connection with the island. "We do not want mass tourism. We want quality tourism," he stressed, highlighting Porto Santo's unique assets such as its history, culture, beach, climate, and sea quality.

Batista's remarks echo the call made by Miguel Albuquerque, President of the Regional Government, on September 28th, for greater investment in tourism and improved services to generate higher income. Both officials highlighted the importance of quality, with Batista emphasizing the preservation of Porto Santo's identity and the compatibility of tourism development with residents' interests. The event also served as a platform for exchanging ideas with other island destinations on common challenges like transport and seasonality.
