PR 10 Levada do Furado hiking trail reopens after recovery works

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN, IP-RAM) has announced the reopening of the PR 10 Levada do Furado hiking trail, connecting Ribeiro Frio to Portela. The path had been closed since December 2025 due to a landslide that damaged the boardwalk and the levada channel.

Recovery work, carried out by Águas e Resíduos da Madeira (ARM), included the construction of retaining walls, reconstruction of the channel and pavement, and installation of protective railings. These interventions aimed to restore safety and circulation conditions by stabilizing the infrastructure.

The IFCN highlights that the reopening allows visitors to once again enjoy this emblematic trail, known for its scenic and natural richness within the UNESCO World Heritage Laurissilva Forest. The institute urges responsible behavior, respect for signage, and checking weather conditions.
