Santo da Serra health centre renamed after long-serving GP Filomena Mina

The Regional Government approved renaming the centre in honour of the doctor who worked there for four decades until her retirement.

The Santo da Serra Health Centre will officially be known as the Dr. Filomena Mina Health Centre, in posthumous tribute to the physician Maria Filomena Mina Henriques. The Madeira Regional Government approved the decision on 30 October 2026.

A general and family medicine doctor, Filomena Mina practised at the centre for 40 years, from 1985, caring for families in the parishes of Santo António da Serra, in the municipalities of Machico and Santa Cruz. Known as the "people's doctor" for her closeness to patients, she retired in August 2025 and died in October 2026, aged 72.

The initial proposal from PS-Madeira also called for a formal commemoration, coordinated with SESARAM, her family and the local parish councils. A street in the centre of Santo António da Serra already bears her name.
