The Municipality of São Vicente is organizing a conference titled 'Alberto Vieira: The Man, the Island, and Memory' on Thursday, August 27, at 4:00 PM in the Noble Hall of the Municipal Council. The event is dedicated to the life, work, and legacy of the academic and researcher native to São Vicente.
The conference will be delivered by Graça Alves, a writer and researcher, who will discuss Alberto Vieira's human, academic, and scientific journey, as well as the significance of his work for Madeira. The initiative aims to honor a key figure in Madeiran historical research and his contribution to the understanding of the Region's and Atlantic islands' history.
Alberto Vieira, originally from São Vicente, graduated in History from the University of Lisbon and obtained his doctorate in the History of Discoveries and Portuguese Expansion from the University of the Azores. He conducted extensive research focused on the history of Madeira and the Atlantic space, with studies on topics such as sugar, wine, slavery, and autonomy. His scientific output, published in books, newspapers, and conference proceedings, constitutes an important legacy for regional and Atlantic historiography. He was awarded the Order of Prince Henry's Commendation in 2004.
