September 15: International Day of Democracy

The UN celebrates International Day of Democracy, promoting citizen participation and human rights as essential pillars.

International Day of Democracy, observed on September 15, was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 2007 to promote and consolidate democratic principles globally.

The date, first celebrated in 2008, coincides with the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Democracy by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in 1997, reinforcing the link between democracy, human rights, and citizen participation.

The UN emphasizes that democracy is a continuous process dependent on active participation from everyone, encouraging governments to strengthen national programs dedicated to its promotion and consolidation.
