The Judiciary Police (PJ) arrested two men and a woman, residents of Madeira, at Madeira Airport. The arrests followed the discovery of approximately 11.7 kg of heroin and 1.174 kg of cocaine in the suspects' luggage.
The detainees, aged between 38 and 53, were caught in the act during an operation by the PJ's Madeira Criminal Investigation Department aimed at preventing and combating drug trafficking. According to the PJ, the seized drugs are equivalent to approximately 117,000 individual doses of heroin and 5,870 doses of cocaine.
The three suspects appeared before a criminal investigation judge at the Madeira District Court in Funchal's Palace of Justice on Friday, October 9th. Following their initial judicial interrogation, the judge ordered all three to be held in pre-trial detention, the most restrictive measure available. They were subsequently returned to Funchal Prison in Cancela, where they will remain pending further proceedings.
