Around two thousand kilos of dried skipjack tuna, seized on Monday aboard a small-scale fishing vessel, have been returned to the fishermen. This return ensures the fish can be used at the traditional Lady of Piety Festival, taking place this weekend in Caniçal.
Jacinto Silva, representative of Coopescamadeira, expressed satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting the importance of the dried skipjack for the festival, where it is traditionally offered in sandwiches to visitors. The fish, which was not declared on the records presented during an inspection by the NRP Zaire, was weighed and totaled 2,011 kilograms.
Following the seizure, the case was under review by the competent authorities. The full return of the fish was confirmed by Jacinto Silva, who had hoped for a resolution before the festival. He emphasized that the presence of skipjack is an integral part of the tradition, with attendees expecting to enjoy skipjack sandwiches after the procession.
