A magnitude 5.1 earthquake was felt this lunchtime in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, according to resident reports, including Madeiran emigrants.
The country has been unsettled by ongoing seismic activity, primarily striking the central coast and leaving destruction in La Guaira. Preliminary information from seismic monitoring applications suggests the 5.1 quake's epicenter was near the coast in Aragua state, associated with the Colombian Geological Survey.
This event followed a 4.2 magnitude tremor recorded this morning approximately 10 kilometers east of La Guaira. The quakes caused panic in Caracas, leading to building evacuations and families remaining on the streets fearing aftershocks. There is no official confirmation yet regarding the exact depth of the tremors or reports of material damage or casualties.
