Alabama Inmate Dies of Cancer After Botched Lethal Injection Attempt

Doyle Lee Hamm, who spent decades on death row, died of cancer in November 2021, following a failed execution attempt in 2018.

Doyle Lee Hamm, convicted of the 1987 murder of Patrick Cunningham, died in Holman prison, Alabama, on November 28, 2021, at age 64, due to cancer complications.

Hamm spent over three decades on death row. In February 2018, a lethal injection execution attempt was halted after medical staff struggled for two and a half hours to find a suitable vein, resulting in repeated punctures.

The procedure was abandoned before the execution warrant expired. In March of that year, Alabama agreed not to schedule a new execution date, and Hamm never returned to the chamber. The case reignited debate on the humanity and risks of execution methods in the US.
