Funchal Notícias reports that apparent discharges are occurring in the bed of the São João stream, particularly on weekends.
According to the publication, this illegal practice is exploited by companies or individuals to dump effluents during the absence of active enforcement. The waste ends up flowing into Funchal's harbour, polluting bathing and riverside areas and endangering public health and ecosystems. Dark foamy patches, possibly oil, were observed.
