Companhia de Autocarros da Madeira (CAM) has announced an investment of 5.22 million euros to electrify the Aerobus service, connecting Funchal to Madeira Airport, and public transport on the island of Porto Santo. The project includes the purchase of eight 100% electric buses and the installation of eight charging stations.
Five of the new Karsan e-ATA buses will be allocated to the Aerobus and three to Porto Santo. The investment covers the acquisition of vehicles and charging infrastructure, with 2.7 million euros co-financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
CAM estimates this transition will reduce fossil fuel consumption by over 350,000 liters annually and CO2 emissions by more than 850 tons, in addition to cutting energy costs by over 70%. The vehicles, equipped with modern technology and low floors, are expected to enter commercial operation in the last quarter of the year.
