The Centre for Atlantic History Studies – Alberto Vieira, located at Rua das Mercês, No. 8, in Funchal, celebrates 41 years since its formal establishment on September 17, 1985.
Instituted by regional legislative decree, the Centre aims to promote research and dissemination of the history of Atlantic islands. The project was initiated by the then Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture, João Carlos Abreu, with Alberto Vieira responsible for its setup.
The formal creation of the Centre occurred about three months after DIÁRIO reported the Regional Government's decision to proceed with the initiative, which sought to create a "meeting point for historians of the Atlantic Islands" and utilize Madeira's valuable archive.
