CHEGA MP Francisco Gomes accused the Regional Government of Madeira of "only remembering fishermen when elections arrive," stating the executive has become accustomed to making unfulfilled promises.
Gomes criticized the "embarrassing incompetence" of successive PSD governments in defending fishermen, citing insufficient tuna quotas, equipment failures, restrictions on fish landings, and European regulations for black scabbard fish fleet renewal as examples of their inability to respond.
Additionally, the MP opposed concentrating fish marketing with the company ‘Ilhapeixe’, warning of a monopoly risk that would reduce fishermen's freedom of choice. Gomes also advocated for opening the Savage Islands to pelagic species fishing under appropriate regulations.
