PS-Madeira Criticizes Rejection of Expert Hearings on Urban Model

The debate over high-rise construction in Madeira has drawn criticism from PS-Madeira after the Social Democratic majority rejected a proposal to request evidence from professional bodies.

PS-Madeira leader Célia Pessegueiro stated that this decision means the parliamentary debate on the petition for the “Safeguarding of Madeira’s Urban Model” will proceed without their input. Pessegueiro argued that while the issue involves political choices, these should be informed by technical expertise, particularly given recent changes in planning legislation that increase the responsibility of architects and engineers.

Further proposals by the PS to consult the Regional Directorate for Spatial Planning, the Regional Secretariat for Equipment and Infrastructure, and the Association of Municipalities of the Autonomous Region of Madeira were also rejected. The discussion follows changes to the Legal Framework for Urbanisation and Building, effective October 1st, which alter project submission procedures and enhance the responsibilities of technical professionals and municipal councils for inspections.
