The CHEGA parliamentary group in the Assembly of the Republic has proposed a draft resolution recommending the Government update the national diagnosis and strengthen the network of Official Collection Centers (CRO) for companion animals.
The initiative aims to adapt the capacity of these structures to existing needs, as the last national survey dates back to 2017. CHEGA believes a new assessment is essential to identify shortcomings, set priorities, and improve the response provided to animals and municipalities.
According to MP Francisco Gomes, the proposal suggests a new national survey, annual monitoring of CRO activities with public disclosure of key indicators, and an assessment of necessary measures to enhance the network's capacity and operational conditions. Gomes stressed the need to ensure centers have the resources and conditions to fulfill their mission, arguing that a well-sized network is crucial for animal welfare and municipal support.
