The strike by Childcare Support Technicians, organized by the Union of Public and Social Workers of the South and Autonomous Regions (STFPSSRA), is reporting approximately 95% adherence, according to regional coordinator Nelson Pereira.
Pereira described the first day of the work stoppage as "quite positive," noting "many schools closed" and others operating only partially. The strike, scheduled for today and tomorrow, remains active after other unions suspended their actions following a memorandum of understanding.
The STFPSSRA justifies continuing the strike by stating they were not involved in the negotiations leading to the memorandum, demanding "concrete answers" rather than "good intentions." Their demands include career review, salary increases, and the implementation of pay supplements.
The union also seeks clarity on the negotiation schedule and terms, warning that "other forms of struggle" may be pursued if the Regional Government continues to ignore the workers. Nelson Pereira emphasized that the participation numbers reflect widespread discontent in the sector.
