Madeira's Regional Civil Protection Service is urging residents to take precautions as the weather is expected to deteriorate, with potentially heavy rain from Saturday, 31 October.
The rain could be especially heavy on the southern slopes and in mountainous areas, with thunderstorms also possible on Monday, 2 November. The Portuguese Institute for Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) forecasts very cloudy conditions until Friday, with mostly light rain on northern slopes and higher ground. IPMA says it is still too early to determine whether rainfall warnings will be issued.
Civil Protection warns that heavy rain could cause flash floods, landslides and falling debris. Residents are advised to clear gutters and drains where safe, and to secure or bring in outdoor furniture. Drivers should avoid flooded roads and watercourses, and take particular care on mountain roads and near steep slopes.
