Hela 5, a three-year-old Belgian Shepherd serving with the Colombian National Army, survived for seven days alone in the jungle and covered approximately 28 kilometers to reach the Vetas Central military base in Tibú municipality, following an ELN attack. The dog became separated from her handler, soldier Julián Naveros, during an operation and, guided by scent, managed to return to base.
The reunion with soldier Naveros was described as an emotionally charged moment, highlighting the strong bond between service dogs and their handlers. Hela 5 had participated in numerous military operations in the region, including mine detection and support for anti-narcotics efforts.
Just days after her return, Hela 5 assisted in locating a cocaine processing laboratory, leading to the seizure of over a thousand kilograms of the drug and associated chemicals. The dog's story has become a symbol of resilience and loyalty in Colombia.
