Cristiano Ronaldo's recent departure from the national team has sparked divided opinions among Funchal residents. Some argue it's time to give younger players a chance, while others believe the captain deserved one last opportunity to represent Portugal.
Interviewed by DIÁRIO NOTÍCIAS, Madeirans acknowledged the sadness of the moment, despite disagreements on the player's reasons and attitudes. José Ferreira, an unconditional fan, admitted that while Ronaldo is physically fine, his performance is no longer the same, advocating for a calmer decision-making process.
Martim Fernandes, however, drew parallels with Argentina and Messi, suggesting Ronaldo should be more valued for his impact on and off the field. Both agreed that Ronaldo's attitude in not joining teammates to thank fans after the Norway game was "ugly" and that the captain must always set an example.
Regarding the future, shopkeeper João Pedro stressed that the national team's results are paramount, with or without Ronaldo. The assignment of the number 7 jersey to Rafael Leão also caused disagreement. Most interviewees expressed a desire to see Ronaldo play for the national team one more time, for a dignified farewell, preferably with a trophy.
