Miguel Albuquerque announced last Wednesday his intention to expand the Porto Moniz Care Home by an additional 20 beds. The proposal involves constructing a new building on an adjacent plot of land, which still needs to be acquired, with funding from Madeira's Social Security.
However, in February 2025, during a visit to the Care Home's renovation works, Albuquerque had already publicly expressed the intention to increase the institution's capacity. At the time, the discussion was about an expansion of 10 to 15 beds, using community funds or the Regional Government's own budget.
Despite the renovation carried out, the Care Home's capacity remained unchanged at 36 places. The new proposal, announced in October 2026, is more ambitious, but the land acquisition and the timeline for the work have not yet been defined, leaving the expansion as an intention dependent on future decisions.
