Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital began robotic-assisted orthopedic surgeries this Friday, with the Mako SmartRobotics system now operational in the Central Operating Theatre.
The official presentation of the new equipment was attended by the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, marking a public investment of approximately €1.6 million in modernizing the region's healthcare.
Intended for total and partial knee replacement, as well as total hip replacement procedures, this technology enables more precise and personalized interventions, based on CT scans that generate 3D models of the joint.
The Mako SmartRobotics system provides real-time guidance and control, establishing virtual safety boundaries to protect anatomical structures and healthy tissues, promising significant improvements in post-operative recovery and long-term clinical outcomes.
