A delegation of ten MEPs from the European Parliament's Committee on Regional Development (REGI) visited the Serra de Água Hydroelectric Power Plant, focusing on the importance of European funds for Madeira's energy transition.
The visit, part of a mission to the region led by Younous Omarjee, Vice-President of the European Parliament for outermost regions, included Portuguese MEPs Sérgio Gonçalves and Paulo Nascimento Cabral. The Madeira Electricity Company (EEM) presented investments in the electricity and renewable energy sectors, with the refurbishment of the Serra de Água plant receiving approximately 23 million euros from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).
EEM also reported an investment of 217 million euros in renewable energy and grid services between 2017 and 2026, with the renewable electricity share reaching 47% in the first half of the year. Madeira currently has nine hydroelectric power plants with significant installed capacity.
