The JPP deputy in the Assembly of the Republic, Filipe Sousa, formally questioned the Minister of Justice regarding the state of abandonment and degradation of the former Madeira Educational Centre (CEM), located in Santo da Serra.
The infrastructure, which cost around 10 million euros and operated for approximately three years, has been closed since 2013. Built for the reception, rehabilitation, and reintegration of young people, the complex has remained unused for over a decade.
The JPP recalls that the Legislative Assembly of Madeira unanimously approved Resolution No. 24/2024/M, recommending the transfer of the property to the Autonomous Region for social utility purposes, specifically for the establishment of a Therapeutic Community, without a solution being implemented to date.
The party criticizes governmental inaction and requests clarification on conservation or reuse efforts since 2013, the current state of the property, estimated recovery costs, and funds already spent on maintenance and security. The JPP also questions the response to the regional Parliament's resolution and the Republic's Government's willingness to permanently transfer the space to the Region.
