Chega MP Francisco Gomes argued that Madeira's autonomy is a political, historical, and institutional heritage belonging to all Madeirans, regardless of their political choices. He believes autonomy should be used to improve the population's lives and promote the region's development.
Gomes criticized the regional government for what he sees as reducing the defense of autonomy to a political convenience argument, particularly over the last decade. He contended that autonomy was won to provide Madeira with decision-making tools for its future, not to shield the regional government from scrutiny.
The Chega MP also accused the current government of using its powers to pressure opponents and distribute public funds within a network of interests. He asserted that Chega advocates for an autonomy that serves the Madeiran people, aiming for better healthcare, housing, security, and quality of life.
