Four homing pigeons made history in Madeira by breaking the region's pigeon racing distance record, covering 416 nautical miles on the high seas to Funchal.
The pigeons were released at 7:00 AM from the merchant ship Jaime S, which supported the initiative. A total of 50 pigeons were released, but only four managed to complete the approximately 770-kilometer journey.
The previous regional record, set about 25 years ago, was 372 nautical miles. This new mark represents a milestone for Madeiran pigeon racing, highlighting the endurance and navigation skills of the pigeons under demanding conditions.
