Funchal leads foreign demand for housing in Portugal, both for purchase and rental, according to recent data from the real estate portal Idealista/data for May 2026.
In the Madeiran capital, international demand for houses for sale accounts for about 22% of total ad visits, placing Funchal at the top of the national ranking, alongside Ponta Delgada. The United Kingdom is the main country of origin for this demand, followed by Germany and the United States. Factors such as safety, quality of life, mild climate, and strategic location reinforce the region's attractiveness.
In the rental market, international demand in Funchal is also significant, albeit with less weight. Germany leads in this segment, followed by Canada and the United States. Island capitals, like Funchal and Ponta Delgada, remain the main poles of external interest in the Portuguese real estate market.
