During his visit to Madeira, Socialist Party Secretary-General José Luís Carneiro stated that the blue economy must be a major national priority. He emphasized the importance of leveraging the full potential of maritime activities to diversify the economy and create skilled, sustainable jobs for future generations.
As part of the 'Blue Economy Route,' Carneiro visited the Whale Museum in Caniçal, met with fishermen, and participated in a wildlife observation trip in the Ponta de São Lourenço natural reserve. He highlighted the connection between science, research, and knowledge, as well as the land-sea relationship, which underpins Machico's goal of establishing a geopark.
Carneiro expressed regret that the current government does not prioritize the blue economy, especially as Portugal is set to have one of the world's largest maritime areas following the UN's continental shelf review. He pledged that, if he becomes prime minister, the blue economy will be a cornerstone of the Autonomous Region of Madeira's economic diversification and youth opportunity creation.
Regarding the Madeira-mainland ferry link, Carneiro demanded that the government implement the promised studies, due for release by December 2025, criticizing plans that remain only on 'powerpoints.' For the fisheries sector, he advocated for increased fuel subsidies and funding for vessel modernization, in dialogue with regional authorities.
