High-speed train collision in Spain leaves at least 68 dead

Two high-speed trains collided near Urda, in Toledo, on the Madrid–Seville line, killing at least 68 people and injuring more than 100.

Two high-speed trains collided on 28 October 2026 near Urda station in the province of Toledo, on the Madrid–Seville line. The latest official count is at least 68 dead and more than 100 injured, many seriously.

According to available information, a Renfe AVE with about 397 passengers struck from behind a stationary Iryo train carrying about 146 passengers. The crash happened at 08:54 local time. Several carriages derailed and traffic was suspended in both directions.

Authorities point to a fault in the automatic safety and signalling system. Spain's transport minister said the AVE was ordered to resume despite a red signal. Responsibilities are under judicial and technical investigation, and the Guardia Civil has, so far, found no sign of sabotage.

As of the latest information, no Portuguese citizens have been confirmed among the victims. The Portuguese government has expressed condolences, and consular services are monitoring the situation.
