Iniciativa Liberal Highlights Obstacles Preventing Young People from Thriving in Madeira

The party points to housing difficulties, qualified employment, and pension system sustainability as challenges for Madeira's youth.

Iniciativa Liberal (IL) marked International Youth Day by highlighting the obstacles young people face in Madeira, while expressing confidence in the possibility of building a life on the island. IL argues that conditions must be created for staying in the region to be a choice, not a sacrifice.

The party identifies the loss of young population and difficulties in accessing housing, qualified employment, and building a life project as realities that need changing. 2025 data showed that young people under 15 represented 11.7% of the resident population, with around 6,000 individuals aged 16-34 being outside the labor market or training.

Gonçalo Maia Camelo, an IL deputy in the ALRAM, emphasized housing access as a significant barrier, with average sale prices at €3,762/m² and rentals at €16.2/m² in July 2026. IL also raises concerns about the tax burden and the sustainability of the pension system, questioning the dignity of future pensions for the current generation.
