José da Silva ‘Saca’ Sea Race attracts over 200 participants in Funchal

The 31st edition of the José da Silva ‘Saca’ Sea Race celebrated Funchal's 518th anniversary with over 200 swimmers.

The 31st edition of the José da Silva ‘Saca’ Sea Race, a 1 km open water swimming competition, took place on Sunday, August 23rd, as part of Funchal's 518th-anniversary celebrations. The race route connected Funchal's pier to the Barreirinha Bathing Complex.

Organized by the Madeira Swimming Association with support from various local entities, the event saw over 200 participants, including registered athletes, amateurs, and those in adaptive swimming. Sports councilor Helena Leal attended, and the Funchal City Council provided €5,000 in support.

Winners included Sérgio Abreu (male registered), Pauline Ringue (female registered), André Santos (male amateur), Mariana Góis (female amateur), and Joaquim Carvalho (adaptive race). The event concluded with an awards ceremony and a social gathering.
