JPP deputy Miguel Ganança criticized the Regional Secretary of Education, Elsa Fernandes, and the Regional Government, led by PSD/CDS, for the "teacher shortage" and for delaying solutions to injustices in the teaching career.
Ganança accused the executive of being aware of the aging teaching staff problem and of ignoring warnings, resulting in the current "structural shortage." The deputy recalled that in September, Elsa Fernandes assured there was no teacher shortage, but now acknowledges difficulties. JPP points out that proposals to correct injustices, such as career progression issues, were rejected by PSD and CDS in 2025 and 2026.
The party also criticized the government's comparison with the Azores regarding the recovery of frozen time, stating that Madeira was not a pioneer and that recovering frozen time does not resolve other injustices. Furthermore, JPP mentioned that teachers are still not receiving overtime pay and that the high cost of living exacerbates the region's loss of attractiveness for teachers.
