JPP calls for collaboration to restore Christ the King of Garajau, warning of its state of decay

The JPP party warns about the risk to the restoration of the Christ the King of Garajau Monument, the world's oldest, requesting inter-entity cooperation.

The JPP party addressed the need for restoration of the Christ the King of Garajau Monument, a topic previously highlighted by Funchal Notícias. The party expresses concern that the restoration may be seriously compromised.

Milton Teixeira, president of the Caniço Parish Council, voiced disappointment with the monument's "state of degradation and abandonment," noting that access is currently blocked. Teixeira pointed to the "disinterest" of the Regional Government, particularly the Regional Secretariat for Tourism, Environment, and Culture, despite the monument and surrounding area being private property and the Regional Government collecting rent from local businesses.

With the monument set to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027, Teixeira appealed for collaboration among all entities to ensure the "jewel of Madeira's cultural and religious heritage" is respected and restored, preventing celebrations from occurring while the monument is in an "advanced state of degradation."
