JPP Calls for Preservation of Christ the King Monument in Garajau

The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has launched an appeal to "save" the Christ the King Monument in Garajau, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027.

Milton Teixeira, president of the Caniço Parish Council, expressed "disappointment" with the "disinterest" of the Regional Government, particularly the regional secretariat for Tourism, Environment, and Culture, regarding the monument's "degradation and abandonment." Although privately owned, the regional government collects rent from commercial establishments in the area but, according to Teixeira, shows no "institutional interest in solving a problem with an icon of the Region's cultural and religious heritage."

Teixeira lamented the lack of program contracts for heritage requalification, contrasting it with support provided to other municipalities. The councilman appealed for a joint meeting to discuss and make decisions, emphasizing that Christ the King "deserves the institutional respect of all of us" and that celebrating it in a state of disrepair would be a "profound disregard."
