JPP calls for transparency over Ponta de São Lourenço bridge

The JPP demands answers from the regional government on a concrete bridge in a protected Natura 2000 area, reviving a debate on political consistency.

The Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) has again demanded explanations from the Madeira Regional Government over the construction of a concrete bridge at Ponta de São Lourenço, a classified area within the Natura 2000 network. MP Rafael Nunes asked for clarification on the solution adopted when a footpath was redeveloped, where a wooden structure reportedly gave way to concrete.

The party wants to know what alternatives were considered, whether an environmental impact assessment was carried out, and whether the work meets the conditions applying to the territory. Transparency in such a sensitive natural space is widely seen as a legitimate demand.

The move has also reopened debate over consistency, since the JPP governs the Santa Cruz council, which has carried out works in Caniço. No public records have so far been found to substantiate specific claims about roads and paving in the municipality.
