JPP Expresses Solidarity with Victims of Earthquakes in Venezuela

The Secretary-General of Juntos pelo Povo (JPP), Élvio Sousa, has expressed solidarity with the victims of the earthquakes that struck Venezuela. This comes after the Portuguese government declared a national day of mourning in memory of those who died.

Sousa extended condolences to the families of Madeirans and descendants of Portuguese who lost their lives, and offered words of hope to all affected by the tragedy. He highlighted the scale of the disaster, describing the images from Venezuela as "devastating" and emphasizing the "enormous human fragility" it reveals, calling for solidarity from Madeirans, Portuguese citizens, and the international community.

Recalling the historical, human, and cultural ties between Portugal and Venezuela, home to a large Portuguese diaspora, Élvio Sousa stressed the importance of this connection, particularly in times of "extremist radicalism." The party also noted the work of its communities department, which has been monitoring the situation through a member who was in Venezuela during the disaster.
