The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) parliamentary group met with the Madeira delegation of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds (SPEA) to discuss the growing impact of light pollution on the archipelago's biodiversity.
The meeting served to present the conclusions and practical progress of a project underway to mitigate excessive nighttime artificial light. SPEA warned of the serious consequences of disordered public lighting on local fauna, with a particular focus on endemic seabirds.
SPEA advocates for the creation of Public Lighting Master Plans that limit light directed towards the sky and implement light cut-off schedules. JPP has committed to analyzing the data for potential legislative initiatives.
