The CDU (United Democratic Coalition) met in Funchal to analyze the council's political situation, issuing a statement on what it deems an environmental crime.
According to the party, the issue of basic sanitation is increasingly concerning, with the municipality neglecting this fundamental need. The situation is particularly severe in higher areas, but also extends to the coast, with reports of open sewage in beaches like Formosa and Vigário.
The CDU considers the ineffectiveness of Wastewater Treatment Plants (ETARs) in coping with population growth a "true environmental crime" and demands their urgent expansion, along with the creation of sanitation infrastructure in areas where it is currently lacking.
