JPP Proposes Structured Support Mechanism for Madeira's Fishing Sector

The Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has proposed the creation of a structured support mechanism for Madeira's fishing sector. This mechanism would be activated during exceptional situations impacting fishermen's income, such as fish scarcity or adverse weather conditions.

JPP deputy Jéssica Teles, who presented the proposal at the Tuna, Bonito, and Seafood Festival in Caniçal, stressed that fishermen should not rely on improvised responses. The party also suggests modernizing the sector through science and research, proposing a strategic study on fishing gear in partnership with the University of Madeira.

Furthermore, JPP advocates for the Regional Government to prepare the fleet for decarbonization challenges, encouraging vessel modernization with sustainable energy solutions. The party believes consistent policies, planning, and investment are crucial for valuing the fishing industry.
