The JPP has raised doubts about the works to upgrade the trail at Ponta de São Lourenço, one of Madeira's most popular walking routes, particularly the decision to replace a wooden bridge with a concrete structure.
Parliamentary deputy Rafael Nunes, who chairs the Parliamentary Committee on Environment, Climate and Natural Resources, visited the site and says the work requires clarification, as the area is classified as a Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area under Natura 2000. The party says it does not dispute the need to renovate the trail or improve user safety.
Nunes asks which alternatives were considered, whether the environmental impacts were assessed, and whether an environmental impact or incidence assessment was carried out, as well as how the works comply with the area's management plan.
