Funchal City Council is carrying out cleaning and maintenance work on the streams in the municipality, as part of its efforts to prevent risks and protect the environment.
The council says interventions have already been made in 30 streams this year, clearing about 7,000 metres of watercourses by removing waste, accumulated vegetation and other materials that could block the flow of water. An external company has also been hired to clean roughly 12,000 metres of streams.
The council says the work is meant to ensure proper water flow and reduce the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rain.
