Madeira asked to switch off lights on 30 October to protect young shearwaters

SPEA-BirdLife invites residents, businesses and institutions to turn off unnecessary outdoor lighting on 30 October, from 8pm to 11pm.

SPEA-BirdLife is inviting Madeira and Porto Santo to take part in a collective blackout on 30 October, from 8pm to 11pm, to protect young Cory's shearwaters.

At this time of year, the young birds, only a few months old, leave their nests and make their first flights towards the sea. Artificial light can disorient them and draw them into urban areas, where they risk colliding with structures or falling to the ground.

Several municipalities, hotels and the Madeira Airport have said they intend to join. Anyone can support the initiative by registering through the «Save a Seabird» campaign form. Rescue campaigns for birds that fall to land run until 5 November.
