Porto Santo receives 170,000 cubic meters of sand to combat coastal erosion

The Regional Government of Madeira is implementing a 2.1 million euro intervention to strengthen Porto Santo's coastal protection, aimed at combating erosion.

The operation, funded by the LIFE DUNAS and Praia Sustentável projects, began with the arrival of a dredger on October 18 and includes the dredging of the Porto de Abrigo, sand placement on the beach, and the reconstruction of a dune system in Calheta. Work will continue until November, with results monitored until 2028.

According to the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment, and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, the intervention is based on scientific knowledge and aims to combine beach protection with infrastructure safety and ecosystem preservation.
